I want to personally fight whoever marked some of these books as thrillers. Like I need names, I need accountability, I need a public apology. Because why did I sit there for 300 pages waiting for the plot? And what I got was vibes, bad decisions, and a twist that made me so angry. And don't even get me started on the ones that think they were confusing, but really,
they weren't. No, you did not outsmart me. You lost me. Find out what books we loved and those we didn't in this electrifying episode. Let's slay these books. Welcome back to Book Slayers, where we read books so you don't have to waste your emotional stability on the wrong ones. And today we are doing something extremely necessary for the community. While we currently recover from multiple, my God. Betty (00:50.07)

dear. Bonny (01:00.718)
We are currently recovering from multiple literary betrayals. my God, that was a fucking mouthful. We are ranking, fuck, we are ranking the top three best thrillers of the year so far and the worst three offenders that should have been left in drafts because some of these books were not thrillers, not psychological, not even coherent. They are crimes. And unfortunately we read them. Betty (01:08.238)

Bonny (01:30.636)
So if you've ever been personally victimized by a overhyped thriller, if you've ever trusted, you'll never see the twist coming and immediately regretted it. Stay with us because we're about to name names. Bonny (01:45.32)
Just so you guys know this is the very last episode of Betty and Bonnie book slayers ever because we got several inches of snow overnight and she is getting sunburned and I no longer can have her in my life
Betty (02:01.422)
Do know what? Today I've been here for a week and I am so bad that I've tried to put colors to cover it but I don't think it quite does. I don't even want to show but just to show and that's it. That's all you're saying. It is terrible. I need to learn to tan better, clearly. But I am live from Egypt today and I'm very excited to still be doing the podcast for all of you. And Stacey's love in the snow. Bonny (02:14.14)
your flesh. Bonny (02:23.963)
I you. hate you. See, she was on vacation and she still lovingly wants to give you guys content. And all I got was, and I'm not even joking, we got 25 centimeters of snow overnight. It's this deep outside. It's fricking spring. Betty (02:33.452)
We have paused. There is a live pause going on. We have lost connection. Betty (02:44.152)
Holy mother of fuck. I don't even know what to do. Bonny (02:46.723)

We are both stopped. How do we fix this? Bonny (02:53.032)

I would like to see the Pony Pony play. What is happening? Reconnecting. Please reconnect. I wonder if you'll get to see this. That would be fucking hilarious. Betty (04:10.539)
I don't know what to do, I don't know what to do, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know what to do, do do do do do. Betty (04:26.153)

Bye. Ha
Bonny (06:13.512)
was saying stuff to myself because I'm going to cut it for B-roll, hey? I was like, oh no, we lost our Egyptian correspondent. Betty (06:23.58)
singing a song I was like Bonnie, are you? Maybe you'll be Bonnie Blue
Bonny (06:28.828)
You w-
Betty (06:33.943)
was laughing to myself, was like, should I just sing a song? I wonder if you'll see it. I don't know. Bonny (06:38.097)
What am I? It's so funny because there was an episode where me and Jayce were like, were recording and she'd frozen and I'd frozen for her, but we're both like, are like. to watch it! That was so funny! Betty (06:49.655)
you
Betty (06:53.632)
I kept leaving the app, was like, is my internet all right? Is everything seems okay? Maybe we should, can you cut it now that we're on two different things or do we need to start again? Bonny (07:01.926)
No, it's the same episode. It's still running. Betty (07:05.015)
Oh, mine says a minute. Okay, as long as yours is good. That's fine. Okay, excellent. Right, where do we get to? think I was like, and I'm in Egypt and she's got snow and that's the last thing that happened for me. Bonny (07:07.268)
yeah, I've got seven minutes, so. Yeah. Bonny (07:19.058)
Yeah, that was pretty much where we were at, think, but I think this is going to be hilarious. We knew there might be problems, so I'm worried about it. It just shows the realism in... It just shows the realism of what it's like recording. Betty (07:27.035)
Okay, let's... Right, you... Betty (07:32.651)
Yeah, right. You dive in and you start and say like, we'll start with the worst or whatever. You go. Bonny (07:33.991)
Okay. Bonny (07:39.186)
Yeah, that what you want to do? Okay. Slayers, we are going to start with our three worst thriller books of the year so far. We thought we'd give you our crappy pants versions. First, I'm going to start with one of mine. This book was so disappointing. So disappointing. And it's called The Sanatorium by Sarah Pierce. It's a psychological thriller. The fuck it was. Now I didn't like it. Yeah, it weren't. The reason I didn't like it was the lead character, Ellen, she was so annoying. She irritates, every time she started talking, I was like, why hasn't someone punched you in the goddamn face? my God, so bad. And I was disappointed with the reason everything was happening. Like, you know when you get to the end and then it's like, here's the why and you go, what? Look. Betty (08:32.53)
Yeah. Bonny (08:35.432)
Why is it all that time, friend? It was really predictable. Like I'm talking, I could have predicted what was coming next word for word for Batem. Like I'm not even joking. Okay. Yeah. It was that bad. And it was predictable to the point where I saw it was coming. I'm sure every reader out there did, but for some reason, Ellen had no clue what the fuck was going on. She must've been like brain damaged. Like I'm not even joking. And the style was horrible. Betty (08:49.302)
shit. Betty (09:07.829)
you
Bonny (09:08.892)
Like, I will never touch. Like, it just wasn't for me. Like, I'm not saying that maybe there are people that would love it. It wasn't for me. But, her writing style was awful. Betty (09:20.894)
What made you carry on though? Because I know you're quite an advocate for like DNF. Did you think it was going to get better the whole way through? Were you still waiting for the... Bonny (09:28.424)
I wanted to know, I wanted to know why. Like I wanted to see if I had missed something. You know, when you're like, well, I can see what's coming, but what if I'm wrong? And that spurred me on. And I got to the end and I was like, oh my God, that really was it. I was like, Oh my God. But like it was the tropes that drew me in. Cause it's got locked room, isolated set and dark history. I'm like, Ooh, fuck yeah. Betty (09:33.108)
Yeah. Betty (09:39.563)
Yeah. Betty (09:46.313)
Yeah. That is... Bonny (09:56.07)
Stranded in the weather should have given me my first clue, okay? Because no, no, no. And the trope for flawed protagonist. Flawed? She was a goddamn idiot. How did she not walk into walls? She was so stupid. But yeah, I ended up only giving it a two and that was me feeling very generous. Betty (09:56.53)
Ooh, yeah. Betty (10:08.597)
You
Betty (10:12.916)
you
Betty (10:19.955)
Yeah, if I DNF a book, I'll give it a one. If I manage to get through it, then I normally give it a two. I've never won the book that I've finished. But some of the things that you're saying reminds me of the book Five Liars. Now, if you are an avid listener, which I know a lot of you are, you will know that I've already ranted about this book. It's Five Liars by, you remember this, didn't you? I was making you laugh. D.L. Fisher. It was like, like you said about the weather scenario, there was a hurricane there. Bonny (10:28.114)
All I have. Bonny (10:41.703)
Yes. Betty (10:50.065)
It just didn't make sense. didn't really, I still wanted to know what was going on as well. That's why it's similar to what you've just said, but it didn't make sense. The writing was not there at all. And it just, well, if you go, I'm not even gonna talk about it too much. If you wanna listen, I've done an episode where I ranted about this book for 10 minutes, because it pissed me off so much. And I'm just not even gonna go through it again. I too started it, like I said, because I did finish it. The writing was repetitive. think a lot of it was, we can all feel there's something wrong. But she kept saying about every character, they all felt the same. And the setting was like a villa that they've hired out for like a hen, like bachelorette, bachelor party. So there's five of them. But the description of the place was like, everything's white. It was like, anything else so I can get my imagination going. There was like nothing. Bonny (11:38.706)
Yeah. Betty (11:49.653)
Everything's just white. Fantastic. I mean, I do like... I don't know. Two thumbs down from me. Bonny (12:00.04)
Ha ha ha! Betty (12:02.131)
The only thing that was redeemable about this book was there was a dual timeline going on. So we had the five people and it was flicking back to some children that had been fostered and was being mistreated. So obviously some of the characters are definitely the younger characters, but you don't know which one's which. And that was the only redeeming thing for me. I was quite interested in that storyline, but I wasn't really interested in what was happening there. The stuff that they were saying was just ridiculous. I said, I'm going to go on. I'm going on. Move on. It's not great. Do you know what I'd love to hear in the comments? If anyone's read this book and liked it, I'd like to know why. Or if you hated it, please, please tell me I'm not alone. Because I don't like to hate books, but this was terrible to me. Bonny (12:49.928)
I I know. I won't ever touch that book, ever. Betty (12:53.685)
And we've glitched again. Oh, I was about to say, and we've glitched again. I just started doing little dance, was like, and we've glitched again. We're obviously filming in like, even though I'm filming in England, you're filming in Canada all the time, but Egypt, we seem to be having some technical issues. So hopefully you can cut all that shit out. Bonny (13:10.152)
Well, you're in a hotel setting with shared wifi, right? You're in a hotel with shared wifi that-
Betty (13:16.585)
okay. Yeah. Can you see my town swan in the background? It's very far away. It's so cute. Right. Bonny (13:20.744)
I can it's George. I love it. Love it. And I'm sitting here. I have wet high boots and that sucks. And she's got towel swans. Like I said, this is the last ever episode. I'm done with her. Done. Betty (13:37.364)
on just FYI. Lovely aircon because it's so fucking hot out there. It must be, it must be like, there was definitely days on my phone that said it was 33, that was definitely 35 today. Gotta be, it was so hot. Anyway, we digress. I'd love to hear about your next book. I know. Bonny (13:53.96)
We did that a lot. This book that I have picked next, I bought years ago as a mass market paperback and it sat there just staring at me for ages. And I got the audio book and I'm like, it's about time I did this book. And it's called Before I Go by S.J. Watson. Again, psychological thriller. No. Sorry. No, sorry. It was trash. It was garbage. So it was... repetitive as fuck. I felt like somebody was pulling my teeth out rather than reading a book. Like I should have stopped but because I was listening to it I'm like well hopefully it will pick up. Yeah it didn't. There's parts in there there's like a diary like someone's writing their diary entries and I'm like no one in their right mind writes diary entries like this is bullshit okay. I could not suspend my disbelief enough to go okay I can get on board with this. No I fucking couldn't. Betty (14:35.571)
Yeah. Bonny (14:56.712)
I couldn't, I couldn't. I was so mad. I was irritated the whole way through. Like it didn't stop irritating me at all. It was predictable. And I really should have stopped listening. But I was at the point where I was like 70 % through the audio book. And I'm like, I literally had maybe 40 minutes at the speed I was listening at. I'm like, I need to know if it's redeemable anywhere. No, no. Don't read it. Betty (15:23.056)
Yeah. it's a shame. what was the title again? Bonny (15:29.158)
It's called Before I Go by S.J. Watts then. Betty (15:32.882)
See that is a book, I would read that cover and go, that sounds like a bit of me. Bonny (15:36.796)
Yeah, well, listen, okay, the tropes sounded great. Unreliable narrator, secret journal, domestic noir, and gaslighting. And I'm like, fuck, this is gonna be like a real like, woo, I'm gonna feel like someone was messing with my, no. Somebody upset me incredibly. And I only gave it 1.5 stabbies. Betty (15:47.761)
Yeah. Betty (16:00.014)
That's bad. That's bad. Bonny (16:00.582)
Yeah. And you know what? I almost watched the movie. Like there's a movie with Nicole Kidman for the book. And I was like, I put off watching it because I had the book and I wanted to read the book. And now I'm really glad I didn't waste my fucking time on the movie. Betty (16:17.253)
It's not before I go to sleep, it's just before I go. Bonny (16:19.525)
yeah, maybe that's what it's Hang on. Betty (16:22.809)
Before I go to sleep, yeah, because I've watched a film called Before I Go to Sleep with Nicole Kidman in it. Bonny (16:28.22)
Yeah, maybe that's right, before I go to sleep, maybe I just missed the word sleep off my... See, it was that irrelevant. I missed a word out the title. Before I go to sleep, that's hilarious. Is it really? Because the book is shit. The book is shit. Betty (16:30.803)
Yeah, think you just have. Betty (16:36.848)
That's funny. The film is good. Betty (16:44.722)
I mean, I wouldn't say it's amazing. Now I'm trying to think if I read this book. I'm scared I've read this book and liked it. I can't remember. I'm gonna have to, no I don't. Good. Bonny (16:55.855)
God, you know what? This is so funny. Go ahead. No, I was just going to say, the book was so uninspiring that I even left words out the tile. Betty (17:10.386)
When you said before I go, was like, that sounds like that other book. No, think I've got a feeling the film was okay, but I feel like they might have, because is it, hang on, say what happens. Because she goes to sleep every day and she wakes up and she can't remember every day. And she has to leave herself, she has to leave herself notes about what happened. wow. Bonny (17:17.222)
Yeah, well, that is that other book. Bonny (17:29.41)
Yeah. Yes. Betty (17:36.753)
I think we... Bonny (17:37.596)
like the worst groundhog night ever. Betty (17:41.362)
a bit like, you know that movie, 50 First Dates, where she wakes up every day. Yeah, I like that one. I feel like I might have read this book and liked it. I definitely watched the film. I can't remember if I read the book. But yeah, I think I do get what you mean though, because it does get repetitive, because she has to keep remembering the same things. And then every day she gets a little bit more. So it does, yeah, a bit repetitive. I do get. Bonny (17:47.804)
What? Bonny (18:06.578)
Nyeh! Betty (18:11.034)
why you've scored it low. I just can't remember if I actually read the book or if I just watched the movie. I think the movie was alright. It's probably made more drama in the movie. Probably cuts you out. Bonny (18:21.456)
Yeah, they probably... You know what? Now I should go watch it to see if it was better than the book because I have very few books that suck compared to the movie. Practical Magic is one of them. That movie was stellar. That book, boring. Betty (18:36.785)
Maybe you should. I don't think I would say it was like a five star movie, but I think it was probably better than the book from what you're saying. Bonny (18:45.85)
Okay. Okay. I'm going to try that and then I'll let you guys know on Booktalk. Betty (18:50.457)
Yeah, let us know what you think. So my second one is one that we didn't put. Me and you have ranted about this book because we were so angry and hated it so much that we couldn't put it on our normal podcast. We've actually put the episode on Patreon. So if you want to see what we think, Stacey was ranting her face off. I've never seen her so angry about a book, if I'm honest. I was even shocked. Bonny (19:18.128)
It didn't even top my top three worst! Betty (19:22.256)
It was a funny episode, but you can only see it on Patreon. So if you want to see, it's not that expensive on Patreon. Go and check it out. It's quite funny. But the book is The Dead Husbands Club. So I was the one that suggested this book to read for both of us. The book to me, like the write up about it gave... Sorry, go on. Bonny (19:23.162)
It did in the- It was a good episode. Bonny (19:35.138)
It was so bad. Yes, huh? Bonny (19:44.424)
I was not, was just like, it was your fault. Betty (19:49.049)
Yeah, it was definitely my fault. I take full responsibility. But I was going to say the book gave me when I read what it was about, it gave me like desperate housewife vibes. And I love that. So it's a domestic thriller. The beginning of the book, there's four individual husbands that die, not connected, they all die a very different death as well. And it's very much explained how they die. They're all very different. But obviously, the first
point of call when anyone dies is it's their partner so all these wives are now under suspicion right? Cool, love it. The wives decide to get together to find out what happened. Now I'm not being funny, if I was under suspicion of murder and there was other women the same I wouldn't have fucking joined forces with them I'd be like stay the fuck away from me we're gonna look dodgy as fuck. It was just mental. didn't, yeah, I couldn't get on with it. But I kept reading because I was like, it's gonna give me the vibe soon and you know, it's gonna make sense. know, like Desperate Housewives, some of that is like so far-fetched, it's ridiculous, but it brings you in slowly and you love the series. I'm sure anyone who watched this loves Desperate Housewives. It doesn't get better. It gets worse. Bonny (20:59.004)
Yeah. Love that. Bonny (21:04.55)
No. Worse. Betty (21:07.394)
You start to question why you're still reading the book. I almost DNF'd it and I'm quite a... If I get so far into a book, if I'm past 30%, I'm gonna read it. I wish I didn't. It was pretty bad for me. I was not on board with... I'm not even a person who wants to like the characters, but I didn't really like the characters. I didn't like where it was going. I didn't like how it ended. Some of it didn't make sense to me. Half of the storyline wasn't even involved in like what the end was. It was just... Don't bother. You're welcome. Don't bother eating it. Bonny (21:45.5)
No. We just saved you several hours. Yeah, it was bad. Betty (21:52.879)
Yeah, I mean, I think it's a relatively like, I think it's probably like a three, 350 page from memory. But yeah. Yeah, it's just bad. Just don't bother. But yeah, go and check out Patreon because she hates me so much and it's such a funny episode, but we couldn't, we can't put that on Spotify. Bonny (22:03.27)
Yeah, I hated you after making me read that. Bonny (22:14.16)
Nah. I said some, I said things. Yeah, I said things. Betty (22:16.72)
So if you want to find out, go on there. Yeah, he was very cross. I was very shocked as well. I was like, wow, we're going in. Bonny (22:23.815)
I was mad. Yeah. yeah, we went! Let me dimple bunches. Betty (22:31.127)
out on Patreon. Go on then, what was your last worst or least liked book of 2026 so far? Bonny (22:39.304)
So I grabbed this book. It was called Good Me, Bad Me by Ali Land. Psychological thriller. Yeah, okay. So why didn't I like it? The pacing blew like a $2 hooker. I'm not even joking. Betty (23:00.398)
Nyeh! Betty (23:04.612)
you
Bonny (23:05.702)
The whole book was so unrealistic and far-fetched that I was scrambling to make sense of why this person got published. It didn't make any sense. And she had not only animal cruelty in a book, she had child abuse. I'm like, no, thank you. That should have been listed somewhere. It wasn't. I'm like, okay. I don't know how she got published. It was... Betty (23:24.2)
Bonny (23:34.598)
Horrible. The writing style was so bad, I'm fairly certain I could have pooped on a piece of paper and done better. I'm not joking! Betty (23:44.814)
love when you do you just say when you first started talking about this book we was like quite a bit animated like how much we hated my book and you started talking about your book and you're like
It's just like, I don't even want to speak about it. It was that shit. Bonny (24:01.968)
I don't, don't, was that bad, that bad that even telling you about it right now is making me relive the horror that was this book. And I, it was so predictable. It felt like she had cut chunks of like text and gone, fuck it, I'm gonna stick that on page nine, page 17, page 28. And it was, it was almost word for words. I'm like, who published this book? Who in their right mind went, yeah,
Betty (24:30.039)
So this is not a... So is this a self-published author or has this actually gone through a publishing house? Bonny (24:39.43)
I'm fairly certain that it was one of the small publishers. Like she got a publishing deal with one of the small publishing houses and maybe somebody there was a fan. Maybe she caught one of them in a compromising position and this was a blackmail book. I don't know. I don't know. It was bad. God, I really have. Betty (24:58.283)
You've read too many thrillers. You've read too many thrillers. you
Bonny (25:04.712)
I literally, so I read the synopsis and I was like, unreliable narrator, excellent. I've seen a theme this year. I seem to enjoy unreliable narrators. I'm going to come up with a book list. Not this one won't be on it. Evil mother, evil mother, evil foster sibling, and then nature versus nurture. So I was like, I had in my head that this was going to be like, a kid goes bad because they're naughty, a kid goes bad because they were just born bad. And I was so excited and I did finish it. Betty (25:14.24)
You do. Bonny (25:35.068)
And I don't know why I moving forward with it because the whole time I was like, who the fuck wrote this? Who wrote this? Has someone kicked you yet? Because who wrote this? And I literally, again, I gave it 1.5 sabbys. I did finish, and I nearly stopped when I got to about, I was about 80 % through, because I read it. I didn't even audio book it. I read it. I spent time reading this fucking thing. Yeah. Betty (26:00.883)
that's worth. Bonny (26:02.908)
and i'm like, you know what, i just have to know if you're as fucking stupid as you're already coming across and yeah yeah they were the ending? Betty (26:08.237)
Wow, we're not holding back today are we? I like it, I like it a lot. Bonny (26:13.496)
No, I had to know this. If I had to know this book exists, so do you. Don't read it. Don't. Betty (26:19.584)
Yeah, I can't even remember the title. Let's just... Bonny (26:23.17)
Well, I'm gonna have to remind you, it's called Good Me Bad Me by Ali Land. Don't do it! Betty (26:28.65)
That is a title though that would get me. That's a title that would get me. I'd pick that up. Bonny (26:31.866)
Oi, it got me! Bonny (26:36.648)
That was the best part, the title! I'm good, okay. Betty (26:42.551)
So my last worst book, can I just say these are probably the only three books that I too started this year. I've been quite lucky in my book choices. So Unspeakable Things by Jess Lowery. I've had this on my, why are you laughing at that? Cause you already know, cause I already told you, don't read it. Bonny (26:49.448)
Really? Bonny (27:00.989)
kids
I know, I already sent it back to Kindle. I was like, okay, bye. Betty (27:07.5)
I finished this while I was here on holiday, I think. And it sounds great. I'm going to like read you what I've written because it does sort of sound great. So it's inspired by a true story that happened. I think it was in Canada. think it was like in the eighties or something. I'm not sure. Don't quote me on that. So what we follow in the story is a young girl called Cassie. She loves school, loves her life, even though her parents are fucking weird. They throw these fucking weird pies, basically swinger pies, swingers pies. But the kids like walk around and sort out people's drinks until it starts swinging and then they shift you up to bed. But the main part of the, go on. Bonny (27:45.128)
Wait wait, wait, wait, and you read it, knowing that? Betty (27:50.795)
That's not in the read up. That's what I'm telling you it is. I didn't know that. just says that parents are a bit weird and strange and they throw parties. Bonny (27:53.352)
okay. Betty (28:00.144)
but basically the true part of the story is like boys were being taken, but then they was coming back and then they was like, they come back like moody, quite withdrawn. No one really sort of knew what happened to these boys. My mind, my stupid mind went aliens. There's something like supernatural or something because they're being brought back. That's what I thought. Yeah. Obviously I, at this point, can I just say this? I didn't read originally that it was a true story. I just read the story. So I didn't know that, didn't think this really happened, even though it could. So they come back all moody and withdrawn. And then when we follow Cassie, her sister starts acting a bit similar, but it's normally just boys, but now it's happening to Cassie. Sounds so much better than what it was. It was really disappointing, it went on a lot. was just like when it got to all the swing of stuff, I was like, they're the weird parties. And now we're trying to find out why the boys are going missing and coming back. And I don't know. I don't know if the crime was solved, I just know it's inspired by a true story, so don't think all of it's not true. But basically, well, I will ruin it, because it's shit. Basically, they're being taken by someone who's abusing them and they're letting them come home. But he's like hidden, he's like masked up when he does it. But he's like young boys, like in school. I don't want to read that. But I didn't know, you don't know till the end that that's what's happening. You know the parents were there and you start suspecting the parents. There's a police officer that comes to the party. It's like the whole town sounds a bit fucked up to be honest. It's very weird, which is probably what kept me going. was like, what's, what's behind it? Yeah, it was really bad. I don't even think it was badly written. I just think it wasn't a great story. It wasn't what I expected because I was waiting for the aliens to come. But yeah. Bonny (29:38.245)
horrible
Betty (29:52.661)
Terrible book, don't read it. Betty (29:56.971)
It would have been, I thought they was like going away and then being sent back. I didn't read it was a true story. But yeah, it wasn't as my expectation was lowered. I had high expectations and it just didn't hit the mark at all. Same as Dead Husbands Club. I two-starred all these books. Bonny (29:57.128)
It would have been better with aliens. Bonny (30:16.488)
What
Okay. Okay. Yeah. or like, was a second that you said swinger parties and a kid was involved in it. Okay. I'm really, it took me ages to compile my
